وَإِنْ كَادُوا لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ الَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَفْتَرِيَ عَلَيْنَا غَيْرَهُ ۖ وَإِذًا لَاتَّخَذُوكَ خَلِيلًا
And indeed, they were about to tempt you away from that which We revealed to you in order to [make] you invent about Us something else; and then they would have taken you as a friend.

(And they indeed strove hard to beguile thee (Muhammad) away from that wherewith We have inspiredthee…) [17:73]. ‘Ata’ reported that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “This was revealed about the delegation of Thaqif. Theywent to see the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, and asked for unacceptable things.They said: ‘Allow us to worship al-Lat for one year and make our valley inviolable — its trees, birds and wildanimals — just as you have made Mecca inviolable’. They persisted and insisted but the Messenger of Allah,Allah bless him and give him peace, rejected all their demands. They said: ‘We want the Arabs to know ourmerit over them. If you dislike what we say and you are afraid that the Arabs say, you have given them thatwhich you did not give us, simply say that Allah has commanded you to do so’. The Messenger of Allah,Allah bless him and give him peace, did not answer them and this raised their hope. But ‘Umar shouted intheir faces: ‘Do you not see that the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, did not answeryou because he does not like what you have come for?’ The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and givehim peace, was on the verge of giving them what they wanted. And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed thisverse”. Said Sa‘id ibn Jubayr: “The idolaters said to the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace: ‘We willnot leave you alone until you come close to our idols, even if you only have to touch them with your fingers’.The Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, said in reply: ‘And what harm is there in me doing so, ifAllah knows that I dislike it’. And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse (And they indeed strove hard tobeguile thee (Muhammad) away from that wherewith We have inspired thee) up to His words (… acceptedthee as a friend)”. Said Qatadah: “It was mentioned to us that one night the Quraysh met the Messenger ofAllah, Allah bless him and give him peace, alone and their meeting lasted until morning. They talked to him,treated him as if he was one of their greats and chiefs and were agreeable to him. They said: ‘You havebrought something that no human being has brought before; you are our master and the son of our master’,and they kept talking to him until he almost agreed to some of the things they wanted. But Allah, exalted isHe, protected him. Allah, exalted is He, then revealed this verse”.
وَإِن كَادُواْ لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ الَّذِى أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ لِتفْتَرِىَ عَلَيْنَا غَيْرَهُ وَإِذاً لآَّتَّخَذُوكَ خَلِيلاً - وَلَوْلاَ أَن ثَبَّتْنَـكَ لَقَدْ كِدتَّ تَرْكَنُ إِلَيْهِمْ شَيْئًا قَلِيلاً - إِذًا لأَذَقْنَـكَ ضِعْفَ الْحَيَوةِ وَضِعْفَ الْمَمَاتِ ثُمَّ لاَ تَجِدُ لَكَ عَلَيْنَا نَصِيرًا
(73. Verily, they were about to tempt you away from that which We have revealed to you, to fabricate something other than it against Us, and then they would certainly have taken you as an intimate friend! (74. And had We not made you stand firm, you would nearly have inclined to them a little.)
(75. In that case We would have made you taste a double portion in this life and a double portion after death. And then you would have found none to help you against Us.)
Allah tells us how He supported His Prophet and protected him and kept him safe from the evil plots of the wicked transgressors. Allah is the One Who took care of him and helped him, and would not leave him to any of His creation. He is the One Who is His Helper, Supporter and Protector, the One Who is to help him achieve victory and make His religion prevail over those who resist him and oppose him and fight him in the east and in the west. May Allah send peace and blessings upon him until the Day of Judgement.

Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala mengingatkan nikmat-nikmat-Nya yang diberikan kepada rasul-Nya dan penjagaan-Nya dari tipu daya musuh-musuh-Nya yang ingin menggelincirkan Beliau dengan berbagai cara.
Dengan membawa sesuatu yang sesuai dengan hawa nafsu mereka dan meninggalkan apa yang diturunkan Allah.
Yakni jika melakukan sesuatu yang sesuai hawa nafsu mereka (orang-orang kafir).
Karena akhlak yang dikaruniakan Allah kepada Beliau yang begitu mulia dan adab yang baik yang dicintai oleh orang-orang yang dekat maupun yang jauh, kawan maupun musuh. Akan tetapi perlu diketahui, bahwa sesungguhnya mereka tidaklah memusuhi Beliau kecuali karena kebenaran yang Beliau bawa. Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala berfirman, âSesungguhnya Kami mengetahui bahwa apa yang mereka katakan itu menyedihkan hatimu, (janganlah kamu bersedih hati), karena mereka sebenarnya bukan mendustakan kamu, akan tetapi orang-orang yang zalim itu mengingkari ayat-ayat Allah.â (terj. Al Anâaam: 33)
