O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allah, investigate; and do not say to one who gives you [a greeting of] peace "You are not a believer," aspiring for the goods of worldly life; for with Allah are many acquisitions. You [yourselves] were like that before; then Allah conferred His favor upon you, so investigate. Indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

(O ye who believe! When ye go forth (to fight) in the way of Allah, be careful to discriminate…) [4:94]. AbuIbrahim Isma'il ibn Ibrahim al-Wa'iz informed me> Abu'l-Husayn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamid> Ahmadibn al-Husayn ibn 'Abd al-Jabbar> Muhammad ibn 'Abbad> Sufyan> 'Amr>> 'Ata'> Ibn 'Abbas who said:“Some Muslims chased a man for his booty. When they got to him, he said: 'Peace be with you'. But theykilled him and took his booty. The verse was then revealed (… and say not unto one who offereth youpeace: “Thou art not a believer”, seeking the chance profits of this life), i.e. that booty”. This was narratedby Bukhari from 'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah and also by Muslim from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah; and both transmittersrelated it from Sufyan. Isma'il informed us> Abu 'Amr ibn Nujayd> Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Khalil>Abu Kurayb> 'Ubayd Allah> Isra'il> Simak> 'Ikrimah> Ibn 'Abbas who said: “A man from Sulaym who hadsheep with him passed by a group of Companions of the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give himpeace. He greeted them with the greeting of peace, but they said to each other: 'He greeted you with thegreeting of peace only to seek refuge from you'. And so they killed him and took his sheep and went to theMessenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, after which Allah, exalted is He, revealed (O ye whobelieve! When ye go forth (to fight) in the way of Allah, be careful to discriminate)”. Abu Bakr al-Asfahaniinformed us> Abu'l-Shaykh al-Hafiz> Abu Yahya al-Razi> Sahl ibn 'Uthman> Waki'> Sufyan> Habib ibn Abi'Amrah> Sa'id ibn Jubayr who said: “Al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad went out one day at the head of a militaryexpedition and they came across a man with some possession. They wanted to kill him, but the man said:'There is no god but Allah!' Despite this, al-Miqdad went ahead and killed him. He was told: 'How can you killa man who has said, there is no god but Allah? He would have rather fled with his family and property'.When they went back to the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, they mentioned whathad happened, and the verse (O ye who believe! When ye go forth (to fight) in the way of Allah, be carefulto discriminate) was revealed”. Said al-Hasan: “The Companions of the Prophet, Allah bless him and givehim peace, went out in a reconnaissance patrol. While they were there, they met with some idolaters whomthey fought and defeated. One of the men ran away and a Muslim man followed him, in pursuit of his stuff.When he was about to strike him with his sword, the man said: 'I am a Muslim, I am a Muslim!' The Muslimman did not believe him. He killed him and took his possessions which were paltry. The Messenger of Allah,Allah bless him and give him peace, was informed of this. He said to the man: 'You killed him even thoughhe claimed he was Muslim!' The man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, he said it only to protect himself'. TheMessenger said: 'Why did you not split his heart open?' 'Why, O Messenger of Allah', asked the man. Hesaid: 'So that we see whether he was truthful or not'. The man said: 'How was I supposed to know he wastelling the truth, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'You did not know that but he expressed it with his words'.This killer did not live long after this event. When he died, they buried him but the following morning theyfound his corpse on the side of his grave. They dug another grave and buried him, and the following daythey found his corpse on the side of the grave. They did this twice or three times, and when they saw thatthe earth did not accept his corpse, they threw him in some mountain trails. And then this verse wasrevealed”. Al-Hasan commented on this: “The earth contains those who are more evil than this man.However, this was an admonition to them so that they would never do this again”. Abu Nasr Ahmad ibnMuhammad al-Muzakki informed us> 'Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Battah> Abu'l-Qasim al-Baghawi>Sa'id ibn Yahya al-Umawi> his father> Muhammad ibn Ishaq> Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Qusayt> al-Qa'qa'ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Hadrad> his father who said: “The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give himpeace, sent us in a military expedition to Idam. This was before his conquest of Mecca. It happened that'Amir ibn al-Adbat al-Ashja'i passed by us and greeted us with the greeting of Islam, but we mistrusted him.Muhallim ibn Jathamah attacked him, due to some feud that they had with each other in the pre-Islamic era,and killed him. He seized from him as booty a camel, a bedding to sleep on and some provision. We thenreported to the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, and informed him about thisincident. Allah, exalted is He, revealed (O ye who believe! When ye go forth (to fight) in the way of Allah, becareful to discriminate…) up to the end of this verse”. Said al-Suddi: “The Messenger of Allah, Allah blesshim and give him peace, sent Usamah ibn Zayd at the head of a military expedition during which heencountered Mirdas ibn Nuhayk al-Damri and killed him. This man was from Fadak, and he was the onlyperson who accepted Islam from amongst all his people. He used to say: 'There is no god but Allah,Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah', and greeted them with the greeting of peace. Usamah said: 'When Iwent back to the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, and informed him of what hadhappened, he exclaimed: 'You killed a man who says: there is no god but Allah'. I said: He said it only toprotect himself'. He said: 'What will you do when he comes on the Day of Judgement to dispute with you bymeans of 'there is no god but Allah''. And he kept repeating: 'You killed a man who says: there is no god butAllah', until I wished that I had only embraced Islam on that day. Then the verse (O ye who believe! Whenye go forth (to fight) in the way of Allah, be careful to discriminate) was revealed”. Al-Kalbi and Qatadahalso reported something of this effect. The authenticity of this tradition is evidenced by the followingtradition. Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Farisi informed us> Muhammad ibn 'Isa ibn 'Amrawayh>Ibrahim ibn Sufyan> Muslim> Ya'qub al-Dawraqi> Hushaym> Ibn Hasin> Abu Zubyan> Usamah ibn Zaydibn Harithah relating the following: “The Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, sent us to al-Hirqahclose by Juhaynah. We raided them in the morning and defeated them. I and one of the Helpers chased oneof their men and when we caught up with him, he said: there is no god but Allah. The Helper stopped but Istabbed him with my spear and killed him. When we went back the Prophet, Allah bless him and give himpeace, he heard of what had happened. He said to me: 'O Usamah, you killed him after he said, there is nogod but Allah'. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, he said it to protect himself'. He said: 'You killed him after hesaid, there is no god but Allah', and he kept repeating it until I wished that I had embraced Islam only thatday”.

Imam Ahmad recorded that `Ikrimah said that Ibn `Abbas said, "A man from Bani Sulaym, who was tending a flock of sheep, passed by some of the Companions of the Prophet and said Salam to them. They said (to each other), `He only said Salam to protect himself from us.' Then they attacked him and killed him. They brought his sheep to the Prophet , and this Ayah was revealed,
(O you who believe!), until the end of the Ayah.'' At-Tirmidhi recorded this in his (chapter on) Tafsir, and said, "This Hadith is Hasan, and it is also reported from Usamah bin Zayd.'' Al-Hakim also recorded it and said, "Its chain is Sahih, but they did not collect it.'' Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn `Abbas commented;
(and say not to anyone who greets you: "You are not a believer;''), "A man was tending his sheep and the Muslims caught up with him. He said, `As-Salamu `Alaykum.' However, they killed him and took his sheep. Allah revealed the Ayah;
(And say not to anyone who greets you: "You are not a believer; seeking the perishable goods of the worldly life).'' Ibn `Abbas said; "The goods of this world were those sheep.'' And he recited,
(Peace) Imam Ahmad recorded that Al-Qa`qa` bin Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad narrated that his father `Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad said, "The Messenger of Allah sent us to (the area of) Idam. I rode out with a group of Muslims that included Abu Qatadah, Al-Harith bin Rab`i and Muhallam bin Juthamah bin Qays. We continued on until we reached the area of Idam, where `Amr bin Al-Adbat Al-Ashja`i passed by us on his camel. When he passed by us he said Salam to us, and we did not attack him. Because of some previous problems with him, Muhallam bin Juthamah killed him and took his camel. When we went back to the Messenger of Allah and told him what had happened, a part of the Qur'an was revealed about us,
(O you who believe! When you go (to fight) in the cause of Allah), until,
(Well-Aware).'' Only Ahmad recorded this Hadith. Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn `Abbas said that the Messenger of Allah said to Al-Miqdad,
(You killed a believing man who hid his faith with disbelieving people, after he had announced his faith to you. Remember that you used to hide your faith in Makkah before.) Al-Bukhari recorded this shorter version without a complete chain of narrators. However a longer version with a connected chain of narrators has also been recorded. Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr Al-Bazzar recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah sent a military expedition under the authority of Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad and when they reached the designated area, they found the people had dispersed. However, a man with a lot of wealth did not leave and said, `I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.' Yet, Al-Miqdad killed him, and a man said to him, `You killed a man after he proclaimed: "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. By Allah I will mention what you did to the Prophet .' When they went back to the Messenger of Allah, they said, `O Messenger of Allah! Al-Miqdad killed a man who testified that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.' He said,
(Summon Al-Miqdad before me. O Miqdad! Did you kill a man who proclaimed, "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah" What would you do when you face, "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah tomorrow") Allah then revealed;
(O you who believe! When you go (to fight) in the cause of Allah, verify (the truth), and say not to anyone who greets you: "You are not a believer;'' seeking the perishable goods of the worldly life. There are much more profits and booties with Allah. Even as he is now, so were you yourselves before till Allah conferred on you His Favors, therefore, be cautious in discrimination). The Messenger of Allah said to Al-Miqdad,
(He was a believing man who hid his faith among disbelieving people, and he announced his faith to you, but you killed him, although you used to hide your faith before, in Makkah.)'' Allah's statement,
(There is much more benefit with Allah.) means, better than what you desired of worldly possessions which made you kill the one who greeted you with the Salam and pronounced his faith to you. Yet, you ignored all this and accused him of hypocrisy, to acquire the gains of this life. However, the pure wealth with Allah is far better than what you acquired. Allah's statement,
(so were you yourselves before, till Allah conferred on you His Favors.) means, beforehand, you used to be in the same situation like this person who hid his faith from his people. We mentioned the relevant Hadiths above. Allah said,
(And remember when you were few and were reckoned weak in the land). `Abdur-Razzaq recorded that Sa`id bin Jubayr commented about Allah's statement,
(so were you yourselves before), "You used to hide your faith, just as this shepherd hid his faith.'' Allah said,
(therefore, be cautious in discrimination), then said,
(Allah is Ever Well-Aware of what you do.) and this part of the Ayah contains a threat and a warning, as Sa`id bin Jubayr stated.

Yakni ucapan "As Salaamu 'alaikum" atau mengucapkan "Laa ilaaha illallah."
Yakni ghanimah (harta rampasan perang).
