Surah At-Tawba Verse 65

And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"

(And if thou ask them (O Muhammad) they will say: We did but talk and jest…) [9:65]. Said Qatadah: “Asthe Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, was heading for the Battle of Tabuk, ahypocrite, who was ahead of him, said: 'Does this man really hope to conquer the castles and fortresses ofSyria, far be it! Far be it'. Allah, exalted is He, informed His Prophet about what they said, and so theProphet, Allah bless him and give him peace, ordered the troops to stop marching. He went to thosehypocrites and informed them of what they said. They said to him in reply: 'O Messenger of Allah, we werejust engaging in idle talk and jesting'. Allah, exalted is He, then revealed this verse”. Zayd ibn Aslam andMuhammad ibn Ka'b said: “One of the hypocrites said at the Battle of Tabuk: 'I have never seen anyonewhose belly is more hungry, whose tongue lies more or who is more cowardly in fighting than these recitersof ours', meaning the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, and his Companions. 'Awf ibnMalik said to him: 'You lie; rather, you are a hypocrite! I will inform the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless himand give him peace, of what you have just said'. But 'Awf found that the Qur'an had already informed him.The man went to the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, when he had already mountedhis camel and set off, and said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah! We were but talking idly and jesting; we weretalking the way riders do to make our travelling easy' ”. Abu Nasr Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allahal-Jawzaqi informed us> Bishr ibn Ahmad ibn Bishr> Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Halwani>Muhammad ibn Maymun al-Khayyat> Isma'il ibn Dawud al-Mihrajani> Malik ibn Anas> Nafi'> Ibn 'Umar whosaid: “I saw 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy walking in front of the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, whilebeing hit by stones [as a result of the galloping of horses], and saying: 'O Messenger of Allah, we were onlytalking idly and jesting', and the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, responded: '(Was it at Allahand His revelations and His messenger that ye did scoff ?)' ”.

(65. If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking.'' Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Ayat and His Messenger that you were mocking'')

(66. Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others among you because they were criminals.)

The Hypocrites rely on False, Misguided Excuses

`Abdullah bin `Umar said, "During the battle of Tabuk, a man was sitting in a gathering and said, `I have never seen like these reciters of ours! They have the hungriest stomachs, the most lying tongues and are the most cowardice in battle.' A man in the Masjid said, `You lie. You are a hypocrite, and I will surely inform the Messenger of Allah. ' This statement was conveyed to the Messenger of Allah and also a part of the Qur'an was revealed about it.''' `Abdullah bin `Umar said, "I have seen that man afterwards holding onto the shoulders of the Messenger's camel while stones were falling on him, declaring, `O Allah's Messenger! We were only engaged in idle talk and jesting,' while the Messenger of Allah was reciting,

("Was it at Allah, and His Ayat and His Messenger that you were mocking'') 9:65.''' Allah said,

(Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed.) on account of your statement and mocking,

(If We pardon some of you, We will punish others among you) for not all of you will be forgiven, some will have to taste the torment,

(because they were criminals), they were criminals because of this terrible, sinful statement.
