وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ
9. And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ
10. And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? -
الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ
11. [All of] whom oppressed within the lands
فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ
12. And increased therein the corruption.
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
13. So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
فَأَمَّا الْإِنْسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ
15. And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."
وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ
16. But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا
8. And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا
11. Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
إِذِ انْبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا
12. When the most wretched of them was sent forth.
