Surah Al-Maaida Verse 105

O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. To Allah is you return all together; then He will inform you of what you used to do.

(O ye who believe! Ye have charge of your own souls. He who erreth cannot injure you if ye are rightlyguided) [5:105]. Al-Kalbi reported from Abu Salih who related that Ibn 'Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allahsent a letter to the people of Hajar, whose chief was Mundhir ibn Sawa, inviting them to Islam, or to pay theJizyah if they chose not to embrace Islam. When Mundhir ibn Sawa received the letter, he showed it to theArabs, Jews, Christians, Sabeans and Magians who were around him. They all agreed to pay the Jizyah anddisliked embracing Islam. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, wrote back to him, saying: 'As for the Arabs, do not accept from them except Islam otherwise they will have nothing but thesword. As for the people of the Book and the Magians, accept the Jizyah from them. When this letter wasread to them, the Arabs embraced Islam while the people of the Book and the Magians agreed to pay theJizyah. The hypocrites among the Arabs said: 'How strange from Muhammad! He claims that Allah has senthim to fight all people until they surrender to Allah and does not accept the Jizyah except from the people ofthe Book. But we only see that he has accepted from the idolaters of the people of Hajar that which he hadrejected from the Arab idolaters'. Allah, exalted is He, then revealed (O ye who believe! Ye have charge ofyour own souls. He who erreth cannot injure you if ye are rightly guided), i.e. who errs from amongst thepeople of the Book”.

(105. O you who believe! Take care of yourselves. If you follow the right guidance, no hurt can come to you from those who are in error. The return of you all is to Allah, then He will inform you about (all) that you used to do.)

One is Required to Reform Himself First

Allah commands His believing servants to reform themselves and to do as many righteous deeds as possible. He also informs them that whoever reforms himself, he would not be affected by the wickedness of the wicked, whether they were his relatives or otherwise. Imam Ahmad recorded that Qays said, "Abu Bakr As-Siddiq stood up, thanked Allah and praised Him and then said, `O people! You read this Ayah,

(O you who believe! Take care of yourselves. If you follow the right guidance, no hurt can come to you from those who are in error.) You explain it the wrong way. I heard the Messenger of Allah say,

(If the people witness evil and do not change it, then Allah is about to send His punishment to encompass them.) I (Qays) also heard Abu Bakr say, `O people! Beware of lying, for lying contradicts faith.'''
